John M. Whelan, Chairman and CEO


John Whelan joined O’Meara Ferguson, Inc., in July 2004 as Chief Executive Officer. From 1983 until he joined O’Meara Ferguson, Jack Whelan served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Golden Rule Insurance Company. He joined the company in 1979 as President and Chief Operating Officer.

During Mr. Whelan’s tenure, the company grew from a Midwest focused small health insurance company to the country’s leading underwriter of health insurance for individuals as well as one of the leading providers of life insurance based financial solutions for seniors to protect against the high cost of long-term care. United Health Group, the country’s largest health benefits company, acquired Golden Rule in November 2003. Mr. Whelan retired from the company in May 2004.

Prior to joining Golden Rule, he worked as a management consultant with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in Chicago. Mr. Whelan is a founding member and past president of Legatus of Indiana. Legatus is an international organization of Catholic CEOs. Active in community affairs, Mr. Whelan currently serves as Chairman of the Culture of Life Foundation, as a member of the Saint Joseph’s College Board of Trustees, and as an honorary member of the Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust Board of Trustees. He is Past Chairman of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County Board of Trustees, the USIC Educational Foundation and Volunteers in Prevention, Probation, and Prisons, Inc. Mr. Whelan has actively served the Catholic Church in Indiana in a number of capacities over the last 30 years. Currently he chairs the Indianapolis Archdiocesan Advisory Board, which provides confidential advice to the Archbishop of Indianapolis regarding the sexual abuse scandal.

Mr. Whelan holds a B.S. degree from Drexel University, Philadelphia, and an M.B.A. from Columbia University, New York.
