Catholic Education Symposium – Bob Longo

Mr. Bob Longo

Bob Longo has built a distinguished career in high technology marked by his reputation for strategically developing businesses, markets, and sales channels. He has held executive positions in larger, mature companies and with emerging, growth companies. Currently, Bob is serving as the President of SchoolOne, a Cleveland-based, software and IT services company focused on web-based, enterprise data solutions for K-12. Starting up over a decade ago, SchoolOne’s very first customers were Catholic schools. Over the past two years, Bob has helped spearhead a large-scale, information systems project with the San Jose and Oakland dioceses that includes the deployment of the SchoolOne Student Information System (SIS), the ActivProgress Data Management System, and custom modules that includes, a unique Volunteer Scheduling & Management System.

Over a span of 13-years Bob has had the privilege to work with Apple Co-founder, Steve Jobs three times, including in his last role as Apple’s division President of PowerSchool, a student information systems (SIS) company. Each year during Bob’s tenure at PowerSchool, the Software Information Industry (SIIA) recognized their SIS as the best education software in its category. Under his leadership, PowerSchool grew its revenue, profits and market share and today enjoys the #1 position in its market. Pearson, a British publishing giant, has subsequently acquired PowerSchool.

Prior to his time at PowerSchool, Bob was the CEO and President of Carnegie Learning (CLI), an education software development and publishing company that was spun-out from Carnegie Mellon University. At CLI he raised $20 million in capital, penetrated 40% of the largest 100 public school districts in 3 years, and was recognized as an Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year”. Carnegie Learning has recently been acquired by the Apollo Group. Before his work with PowerSchool and CLI, Bob co-founded Revive Technologies, a database company, and was President and COO of Surefind Information, an Internet services business.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Longo spent 10 years working at Apple Computer and NeXT, where he held senior field and corporate management positions in sales and marketing, and was key is helping Apple build its K-12 and higher education businesses. Bob began his work career as an educator. He taught full-time at John Carroll University, Lakeland College and Padua Franciscan High School. He has also taught adjunct and lectured at Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Miami University (Ohio), and Cuyahoga Community College.

Bob holds a Bachelor degree in Communication from John Carroll University and a Master degree in Communication from Miami University of Ohio. He has been an advisor or director with various civic and education associations including Carnegie Mellon University’s Innovation Technology Center and GSIA’s FAST program, Innovation Works/PA Ben Franklin Fund, Duquesne University’s Business School and John Carroll University’s Timothy Russert Department of Communication. He has served on the Board of Directors of Hemomax, Inc. and the Pittsburgh Technology Council. He has also was a member of various K-12 technical advisory boards including Fox Chapel Area School District, Steel Valley School District, Hampton Township School District, Beattie Technical School and School Planning & Management magazine. Currently, he is a mentor/advisor to several companies including Aquaminds (Palo Alto, CA), Monarch Technologies (Shaker Heights, OH) and he is assisting JumpStart, a Cleveland, OH economic development concern.
